The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council and serves as the primary legal advisor to the City Council, its Commissions and city departments. Major responsibilities of the City Attorney include framing all ordinances and resolutions of the City Council, providing accurate legal advice and direction to ensure that the city's operations conform with all federal, state, and city laws, as well as representing the city in legal proceedings. These services are currently provided on a contract basis by the law firm of Burke, Williams & Sorensen, LLP out of their San Francisco Office.
